Without relying on words to build a narrative, piano virtuoso & producer Sam Miller and drummer Matt Badger were able to create an instrumental album that speaks to listeners in an unexpectedly profound way. Titled Shiprock, the collaborative project displays the creative chemistry that these musicians have forged since their chance meeting in 2010. More importantly though, it shows how two distinct styles can complement each other so well.
While Sam is a New Mexico-native pianist/composer who thrives on curious experimentation, and has multiple albums to his name, Matt’s musical style goes beyond the indie pop influences of his hometown of Seattle, where he played drums as part of a number of local bands before going solo.
Shiprock impressively merges these different worlds, marrying rhythm with texture to create atmospheric soundscapes that evoke both introspection and relaxation. As effectively encapsulated by the 1-minute opening track, “Voyage”, there is a great balance between ambient and jazzy tones.
The shimmering second track, “Horizon Bound” maintains the transporting feel of the intro, with Lori Goldston‘s cello work augmenting that vibe perfectly.
“Sunglint” — the marvellous lead single which has an accompanying music video — was meant to lift moods, and it does so amazingly. The next track “Blue Hour”, is a piano-driven hymn-like piece which is beautiful in its simplicity. “Hypnagogia”, “Forgon” and the lively “Current” are other standouts.
The album closes with the aptly calming and meditative “Ease”. I have to admit that, with every listen, I’ve appreciated more and more the cohesive nature of this album. Matt Badger and Sam Miller have created a charming album with this one, managing to tell inspiring stories using only instrumentals.
Shiprock was released on April 18th via Jenny Invert Records. Listen and be sure to connect with Sam Miller and Matt Badger on Instagram.
